Tragically, during severe weather conditions in the northern part of the country, Mr Chilima, along with eight others, lost his life in a devastating plane crash. This unfortunate incident has left the nation in mourning, as Mr Chilima was a highly respected figure. To honor his memory, a funeral service was held at the national stadium, where tens of thousands of Malawians gathered to pay their respects. The overwhelming turnout demonstrated the deep connection Mr Chilima had with the people, especially the youth, who saw him as a beacon of hope in the realm of Malawian politics.

Despite facing a challenging period, Mr Chilima's party formed a coalition government with President Chakwera's party after the 2020 elections. This alliance was a significant step towards unity and progress for the nation. However, Mr Chilima himself faced legal troubles when he was arrested on corruption charges in 2022. Fortunately, these charges were dropped last month, and throughout the ordeal, Mr Chilima maintained his innocence. While some of his supporters expressed dissatisfaction with the government's handling of the events leading to his death, they openly voiced their disapproval by booing the president during his eulogy. In response, President Chakwera has pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the crash to determine its cause, ensuring transparency and justice for all. The UTM secretary general, Patricia Kaliati, echoed Dr Chilima's stance on rejecting violence and embracing peace, emphasizing the need for unity and harmony within the nation.
