Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have released photographs of Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot, the officer suspected of shooting dead prominent lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu in Nairobi.
Cheruiyot is alleged to have fired the shots that killed Mbobu during an attack along Magadi Road on September 9, 2025. According to investigators, the lawyer was driving home when assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on his vehicle. Cheruiyot was arrested after a yearlong investigation.
Detectives say forensic and ballistic tests link a Ceska pistol issued to Cheruiyot to evidence from the case. The examination reportedly found similarities between the weapon and the cartridge cases and bullet heads collected from the crime scene, Mbobu's vehicle, and his body. An autopsy found that Mbobu had sustained eight gunshot wounds to his upper body and neck, and two bullet heads recovered from his body were sent for ballistic analysis.
The investigation has since widened. Nicholas Lemiso Naula, a boda boda rider, is accused of transporting Cheruiyot to and from the area where the shooting allegedly took place. Noah Kipkirui Langat is suspected of monitoring Mbobu before the attack. Both were arrested in Nairobi after detectives followed leads from CCTV recordings, phone records, and other evidence.
Investigators are also examining a possible link between Mbobu's murder and the July 2026 killing of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso. Inspector Kenneth Sang has been named as a suspect in coordinating an alleged operation, but remains at large. Rose Mbithe, who is linked to the Mutiso investigation, is already in custody.
Mbobu was a prominent lawyer and a former chairperson of the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal. Detectives are still working to establish the motive behind his killing, the role each suspect allegedly played, and whether others were involved.
All the suspects named are yet to be tried, and the allegations against them have not been tested in court.
