Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declared that he is ready to be the running mate of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna if Sifuna emerges as the opposition's flag bearer in the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua made the remarks on Sunday, September 6, 2026, while addressing Kenyans in Spokane, Washington in the United States where he is currently on a tour.
Speaking during the gathering, Gachagua said the opposition is doing the arithmetic on who can best unseat President William Ruto, and he is willing to support Sifuna.
The former Deputy President stated that he is willing and ready to deputise Sifuna, saying there is no problem with that.
"Even I, Rigathi Gachagua, I am ready to deputise Edwin Sifuna if he is the strongest candidate. Mtapenda," he said.
He also dismissed remarks by COTU boss Francis Atwoli who said Sifuna is too young to run for president. Gachagua cited examples of young leaders like former US Presidents Barack Obama and Theodore Roosevelt.
Gachagua said it will be easier for Mt Kenya to support Sifuna than it was to support President Ruto in 2022, noting that Sifuna has no bad record and is his cousin.
This comes as Gachagua has abandoned his quest for reinstatement as Deputy President. On Monday, his lawyers led by Senior Counsel Paul Muite told a three-judge bench comprising Justices Eric Ogolla, Anthony Mrima and Freda Mugambi that he is now seeking compensation for his removal.
Gachagua argues that his impeachment process by Parliament was unconstitutional and violated legal procedures.
Gachagua was impeached in October 2024 after 281 Members of Parliament voted in favor of his removal.
