A family in Kakamega is mourning after a woman was fatally attacked, allegedly by her brother-in-law, in an incident that has left Ilesi village in Shinyalu Constituency in shock.
Patience Penenzi, 25, was allegedly attacked on Thursday, September 24, by Desmond Kirishi, her husband's brother. According to witnesses, Patience was walking her four-year-old child to school when Kirishi allegedly confronted her and attacked her with a panga, inflicting fatal injuries. Her child was also injured in the attack and was rushed to Mukumu Hospital, where the child remains admitted in critical condition.
Villagers said Kirishi had allegedly been making life difficult for Patience prior to the attack. The two reportedly lived in the same compound while her husband was working in Qatar. According to people familiar with the situation, Kirishi had allegedly made advances toward his sister-in-law that she turned down, and some believe that rejection may have contributed to tension between them — though police are still investigating the full circumstances leading up to the attack.
Ilesi Location Chief Ben Mulinya said the suspect had previously been linked to criminal activity in the area, alleging Kirishi had ties to illegal groups operating in the region.
Kirishi reportedly fled the scene after the attack. Police later traced him to Kakamega Town, where officers rescued him from an angry crowd before taking him into custody.
The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue into Patience's death and her child's injuries. The incident has left residents shaken as authorities work to piece together what happened before the fatal confrontation.
