Panic gripped Miami International Airport on Sunday afternoon after an Amazon Prime Air cargo plane failed to stop on the runway and ploughed into cars on a road behind the airport.
The Boeing 767-300 was landing shortly before 2pm when it overran the runway and smashed into several vehicles, leaving at least five people dead.
Five other victims were injured, three of them critically.
The crash sparked a huge fire and fuel spill, forcing emergency crews to battle flames at the scene.
The Federal Aviation Administration immediately grounded all flights at Miami International, plunging the airport into hours of chaos. Hundreds of travellers were stranded, with many forced to sleep in Miami after cancellations.
"Children were crying, long queues everywhere. I will have to find a hotel and spend more time in Miami," one stranded passenger heading to San Francisco said.
The National Transportation Safety Board has now launched a full investigation into what caused the Amazon cargo plane to overshoot the runway.
