Officer Fights for Recovery After Machete Attack During Arrest Operation in Busia

A police officer is nursing serious head injuries after he was attacked with a machete during an operation to arrest a wanted suspect in Butula, Busia County.

The incident happened on Sunday evening, September 27, at Murumba, where officers from Bumala Police Station had been called in to reinforce colleagues at Murumba Police Post. Police said the suspect, identified as Stephen Ouma Okinda, 36, was wanted over an alleged assault on his father on September 22.

According to police, officers had first visited his home on September 23 to arrest him, but he allegedly threatened them with a machete and forced them to withdraw. They returned on Sunday evening with reinforcements.

During the operation, Okinda allegedly struck a police constable twice on the left side of the head with a machete, leaving him with two deep cuts. The officer was rushed to Pamako Medical Centre for initial treatment before being transferred to Life Care Hospital in Bungoma for specialised care. Police said he is in serious condition.

The confrontation also damaged another officer's G3 rifle, which the suspect allegedly cut into two pieces with the machete. Four officers discharged their firearms in an attempt to subdue him. Police eventually overpowered Okinda and arrested him. He is being held at Bumala Police Station pending further investigations.

The incident has raised questions about how the suspect managed to seriously injure an officer and damage a police firearm during the arrest.

In a separate incident, a police officer was injured after a group of suspected looters attacked officers responding to a road accident at Tunnel area in Kipkelion, Kericho County.

Police said officers had gone to the scene of an earlier accident and found a group allegedly looting iron sheets from a HOWO trailer involved in the crash. The suspects reportedly turned hostile and began throwing stones at the officers. A constable was hit on the forehead and rushed to Fort Ternan Sub-County Hospital, then referred to Siloam Hospital in Kericho for further treatment.

Police have opened investigations into both the attack on the officer and the reported looting at the accident scene.
