The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has arrested a police officer suspected of being the gunman who killed prominent lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu in Nairobi, marking a major breakthrough in a case that has remained under investigation for a year.
Police Constable Julius Cheruiyot was arrested following extensive investigations into Mbobu's fatal shooting along Magadi Road on September 9, 2025. Detectives also recovered a Ceska pistol that had been issued to Cheruiyot at the time of the incident.
According to the DCI, a ballistic examination confirmed that the recovered firearm was used in the shooting that killed Mbobu.
Detectives have also linked Inspector Kenneth Sang, who remains at large, to the alleged planning of the attack. Sang is believed to have coordinated the operation with the help of Rose Mbithe, who is already in custody in connection with the killing of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
Dr. Mutiso was shot dead on July 29, 2026, in Upper Hill, Nairobi, in what investigators describe as another targeted attack. The apparent connection between the two murders has widened the scope of the investigation, pointing to what detectives believe may be a network of suspects involved in coordinated killings.
Mbobu was ambushed while driving home from work. In the aftermath, specialised homicide teams worked closely with forensic experts to reconstruct the crime scene and pursue leads — an effort that has now produced tangible results, offering some measure of hope to Mbobu's grieving family and colleagues.
The DCI extended condolences to the families of both Mbobu and Mutiso, acknowledging the pain caused by the loss of their loved ones, and said all suspects, regardless of rank or affiliation, will be pursued and brought before the law.
Constable Cheruiyot remains in custody as detectives continue gathering evidence ahead of his arraignment. Investigations remain active, with detectives pursuing additional leads to establish the full motive, planning, and execution of the murder.
