A simple message sent at 7:30 p.m. has become a key piece of evidence in the disappearance of Lily Chorono Kimtai, wife of a former security officer who served on retired President Daniel Moi's security detail.
Lily disappeared under unclear circumstances, leaving her family in distress as detectives work to piece together what happened. Her husband, Michael Kimtai, said the message was the last communication he received from her before her phone went silent.
According to Kimtai, he was in Nairobi undergoing medical tests when Lily messaged him saying she planned to travel to Mombasa the following day for leisure — a trip he says he had no prior knowledge of, which came as a shock to him.
That message has since raised questions about what happened afterward, and whether Lily left home voluntarily or under other circumstances. Kimtai said he later discovered that his licensed firearm, along with its case, was missing from his safe — a detail that has added another layer to the case and prompted the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to open a deeper probe.
At the family's home in Kaplamai, Cherangany Constituency, Trans Nzoia County, investigators have carried out forensic searches to help establish Lily's movements before she vanished.
The alarm was first raised after her phone became unreachable. A farmhand sent to check on her the following morning found the house locked, heightening concerns for her safety.
Kimtai believes someone may have accessed the house and possibly pressured Lily into revealing information about the firearm, suggesting whoever took it may have known it was there. Detectives are now reviewing phone records and witness statements as they work to reconstruct the sequence of events following her final message.
The family continues to hold onto hope for answers as the investigation into both Lily's disappearance and the missing firearm intensifies.
