Tragedy Strikes Juja Family as Four of Five Quintuplets Die Days After Rare Natural Birth

 

A birth that had drawn celebration from across the country has turned to grief, after four of five quintuplets delivered in Kiambu County passed away just days after their arrival.

Mercy Kanini, a resident of Juja, had become a national talking point after delivering all five babies naturally — an outcome doctors described as extraordinary, since quintuplet births are almost always delivered by Caesarean section. Kanini had gone into labour expecting four babies; medical staff at Thika Level Five Hospital were reportedly stunned when a fifth arrived as well.

Given the risks associated with premature multiple births, the newborns were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital for specialized neonatal care shortly after delivery. Premature infants born in multiples face heightened risks, including low birth weight and underdeveloped organs, and despite the efforts of medical teams at both hospitals, four of the five babies have since died from complications linked to their premature birth.

The news has been a painful reversal for well-wishers who had celebrated the family just days earlier. Doctors at Kenyatta National Hospital are now focused on the surviving infant, working to stabilize the child's condition.

Kanini and her husband, Evans Nyahanga, have received an outpouring of support from the public as they cope with the loss, with many continuing to hold out hope for their one surviving child.
