Drama in Makueni as Goons Attack Protesting Clinical Officers Outside Governor Mutula's Office

There was chaos in Makueni County on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after clinical officers who were holding a peaceful demonstration outside the governor's office were attacked by unknown goons.

Videos seen by http://TUKO.co.ke show young men, some in hoodies and others with masks covering their faces, confronting and beating up the medics as they marched towards Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr's office. The officers were only trying to present their grievances to the county government.

During the confrontation, one of the attackers grabbed the public address system from the clinical officers and started praising Mutula's administration. He accused the medics of being outsiders sent to cause chaos in Makueni. "Mutula Kilonzo has done the work as it is supposed to be done. We tell them to go back to their homes. You will not destroy our county. You have been sent by Gladys Wanga. Go back home," he shouted.

Several people were injured in the attack, including a journalist who was covering the protest. According to the Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO), one female clinical officer suffered a complete fracture of her upper arm and was admitted to a private hospital at her own cost.

KUCO General Secretary George Gibore has condemned the incident, calling it a brutal, unlawful and coordinated attack on medics who were exercising their right to picket peacefully. The union said its members had gathered at Green Park, addressed the press and were heading to the governor's office, and that the County Police Commander had been notified to provide security. "At Junction Mall, the medics' procession was ambushed by armed goons who reigned terror on the clinical officers," KUCO said.

The union now wants investigations done and anyone found responsible, whether private individuals or county officials, to be held accountable under the law. By the time of publishing, Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr and the county government had not issued any statement.

The incident comes as nurses across the country continue with their strike that has paralysed public hospitals, with doctors also threatening to join if the grievances are not addressed.
