Tanzania is in mourning following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband to President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
Hafidh died on Monday morning, September 7, while receiving treatment at Mlimani Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed the death in an official statement, saying he passed away at around 8:00am.
"It is with great sadness that I inform you of the passing of Honorable Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Her Excellency Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan," Ndejembi said.
Hafidh has been a key figure by President Samia's side throughout her long political career, from Zanzibar to becoming Tanzania's first female president in March 2021 after the death of John Magufuli.
Details about his illness and funeral arrangements are yet to be announced by State House.
His death marks a profound personal loss for President Samia Suluhu as she continues to lead the nation.
