Police have given their account of the death of Antony Ochieng, a suspected criminal who died after a vehicle he was travelling in crashed during an alleged escape attempt in Githurai, Kasarani.
Nairobi Regional Police Commander Issa Mohamed said Ochieng sustained serious injuries when the Mazda CX-5 he was in lost control while fleeing from officers. He was later taken to Mama Lucy Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to police, the incident began on Sunday at around 8:30 p.m. in the Sonic area, following reports of theft in the neighbourhood. Officers on patrol reportedly intercepted a Mazda CX-5 carrying five male occupants, who were allegedly found offloading suspected stolen electronics at a second-hand shop run by a trader identified only as "Pau." When the suspects noticed the officers, they reportedly scrambled back into the vehicle and sped off, triggering a chase through the neighbourhood.
The chase ended when the driver allegedly lost control, with the Mazda striking an electric pole before plunging into a ditch. Ochieng suffered critical injuries in the crash, while the other occupants reportedly fled on foot amid the confusion.
Crime Scene Investigations officers later searched both the crash site and the electronics shop, recovering a large haul of suspected stolen property, including 28 television sets, five home theatre systems, laptops, mobile phones, clothing, shoes, and a gas cylinder. Investigators also recovered a dagger and a crowbar, tools believed to have been used in break-ins.
Police say some of the recovered electronics have already been linked to recent burglaries in the Central Region, pointing to a wider criminal network. The exhibits are being held at Kasarani Police Station, where the wreckage of the Mazda also remains.
The case has drawn public concern, with Ochieng's friends calling for a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
