A video recorded nine days before Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo died in a helicopter crash has resurfaced online, and many are finding it difficult to watch in hindsight.
The footage, filmed on September 21, 2026, shows Chivayo's brother approaching the pilot of a red-and-white helicopter at an outdoor gathering. He appears to be checking in with the pilot, seemingly making sure the flamboyant businessman would reach his destination safely.
Crowds of onlookers surrounded the aircraft, phones raised, capturing the lively atmosphere. Buses bearing the name "Johane Masowe Chishanu" are visible in the background, suggesting the gathering was linked to the religious community. In the clip, Chivayo's brother speaks directly to the pilot, in what comes across as a protective gesture toward his sibling.
Chivayo was confirmed dead on September 30, 2026, after a helicopter crash in Marondera Rural, Zimbabwe. Zimbabwean authorities said the aircraft was carrying six people when it went down at around 5 p.m. His wife, Lucy Muteke, also died in the crash, and officials later confirmed there were no survivors.
The resurfaced video has joined a growing wave of clips and tributes about Chivayo circulating online since his death. He was one of Zimbabwe's most prominent and flamboyant businessmen, known for his high-profile investments and ties to political figures across the region, including Kenyan President William Ruto, who publicly mourned him as a "dear friend."
