Two Years On, Family of Officer Swept Away in Nairobi Floods Still Waits for Answers

Two years after Constable David Kibet Chesire disappeared into raging floodwaters in central Nairobi, his family is still waiting for answers.

Chesire, who was 33 at the time, vanished on the night of March 24, 2024, while responding to an emergency near Country Bus Station, close to Muthurwa Market and Kamukunji. Heavy rainfall had caused severe flooding across the city that evening.

Around 10 p.m., Chesire and two colleagues, Jared Kemboi and James Mutea, were on patrol when they received reports of people trapped inside stalls. The officers rushed to the scene and managed to rescue three women and a child after part of a concrete slab connecting the stalls to a pedestrian walkway collapsed.

Chesire then returned to help secure the stalls. That was the last time his colleagues saw him. The remaining section of the slab reportedly gave way, or he may have stepped into an open manhole, before being swept away by the powerful current. His AK-47 rifle, loaded with 30 rounds, was also carried away. His colleagues' attempts to rescue him failed.

The disappearance was recorded at Kamukunji Police Station, and Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei confirmed the following day that a search operation was underway. Police, residents, and other responders searched drains and waterways for days and then weeks, but no trace of Chesire was ever found.

His father, Joseph, remained in the area for an extended period hoping his son would be recovered. His mother, Elizabeth Murugi Chesire, and other relatives appealed for additional equipment and professional divers to assist in the search. At one point, remains believed to possibly be Chesire's were subjected to DNA testing, but the results ruled out the identification.

Chesire left behind a wife and two children. He was also the only son in his family, from Kambi la Moto, Nakuru County.

Today, his family continues an agonising wait, without a body, a burial, or a standard death certificate. The unresolved case has also kept attention on the open manhole and drainage problems that existed in the area where he vanished.

ODM Politician Warns Ruto: These Individuals Are Unfit for Appointment

R obert Alai has recently expressed his views on the matter of former governors being appointed by President William Ruto. According to Alai, governors who have served more than two terms should not be considered for any appointments. He further emphasized that President Ruto should avoid appointing anyone who has already served as governor for two terms, suggesting that this group should be completely excluded from consideration. This stance has sparked a significant amount of discussion among Kenyans on various social media platforms, with many individuals sharing their perspectives on the issue. Alai's argument seems to stem from a desire for a change in leadership and the introduction of new ideas into the government system. He is advocating for action to be taken, indicating that reappointing former governors who have had a substantial impact on their respective counties could impede the progress and transformation necessary for national development. This perspective reflects...
