Bungoma Enforcement Officer Attacked in Suspected Targeted Assault Weeks After Father's Killing

 Residents of Cheptais in Bungoma County are on edge after the son of a former local politician was attacked by armed men in what's being investigated as a suspected targeted assault.

Anthony Wasama, son of slain former Chesikaki councillor Nathan Masai Wasama, was seriously injured on Monday morning while heading to work. Anthony, who serves as an enforcement officer with the Bungoma County Government, was riding on a motorcycle driven by his brother when the attackers struck at around 5:50 a.m. near Kapcheshari Junction in Toroso.

According to the family, four men emerged from the roadside as the brothers approached the junction. Three were allegedly armed with guns, while the fourth carried a panga. The group reportedly stopped the motorcycle and struck Anthony on the head with the machete, leaving him with a deep wound. Good Samaritans rushed him to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition.

The attack has deepened anxiety for Anthony's relatives, who are still grappling with the killing of his father in August, when four armed men allegedly stormed his shop at Tuikut Trading Centre and opened fire. Detectives later arrested five suspects in connection with the councillor's death, though the motive behind that killing remains unclear.

Given the timing and circumstances, relatives and residents fear Anthony's assault may not be a coincidence. Police have opened an investigation to determine whether the two attacks are connected.
