Dispute Erupts Over "Ukombozi" Name as Azimio Coalition Rebrands Ahead of Rival Sifuna Launch

 A naming dispute has broken out within Kenya's opposition politics after the Azimio la Umoja coalition rebranded itself as "The Ukombozi Alliance" (TUA) — a name that closely echoes the "Ukombozi People's Party" (UPP), which Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is expected to launch next week.

According to Taifa Leo, a registrar of political parties has written to UPP confirming that the name "Ukombozi" had already been formally submitted for registration earlier, ahead of Sifuna's planned launch. The rebranding was announced yesterday at an event led by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, where the Azimio la Umoja coalition officially adopted its new name, The Ukombozi Alliance.

The overlap in naming has added a fresh layer of tension to the ongoing rivalry within opposition ranks, with Sifuna still expected to launch UPP next week despite the dispute. Senior figures pictured at the coalition's renaming event include Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Jubilee's Justin Muturi, among other opposition leaders.
