Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has shared how a campaign experience in Mathare shaped her approach to sanitation in informal settlements.
The former Starehe Member of Parliament said she was addressing residents from a raised platform during a campaign stop in Mathare.
She said her feet began sinking into the ground as she spoke. She had to stop her address.
Residents laughed and then rushed to help her out. She later discovered she had been standing on a makeshift toilet used by residents.
Wanjiru said the incident showed her the difficult conditions facing people in informal settlements. She said it left a lasting impression on her.
She said the experience motivated her to support the construction of toilets, water points and washing facilities in Mathare.
The bishop has remained active in politics for nearly two decades. She previously served as Starehe MP and has attempted to vie for Nairobi governor.
She has now announced another bid for Nairobi governor in the 2027 General Election under the Kenya Moja Movement Party.
Her agenda includes waste management, clean water, road and market repairs, county health services and youth opportunities.
