Nairobi Pastor Mourns Loss of Church Building After Landlord Dispute Forces Demolition

A local pastor is mourning the loss of his church building after a breakdown in lease negotiations with the property owner forced his congregation to tear the structure down.

Pastor Joe Mwangi of Light Generation Church shared the news with his followers in a lengthy Facebook post, revealing that the building would no longer stand at its current location. He said sustained efforts to retain the space ultimately failed after talks with the landlord collapsed without resolution, leaving the congregation with a one-week ultimatum to dismantle and clear the site.

For Mwangi, the loss represents more than a physical structure — it marks the undoing of something his congregation built through years of devotion, sacrifice, and prayer. "As a young pastor, watching something we poured our hearts and souls into come down is heartbreaking," he wrote, adding that no words could fully capture the pain of watching a house of worship demolished.

The dispute reportedly centred on the lease arrangement with the property owner, with weeks of unsuccessful negotiation preceding the abrupt vacate notice.

Despite the setback, Mwangi chose to frame the moment as an opportunity for renewed faith rather than despair, reminding his congregation that a church is defined by its people and shared purpose, not the walls that house them. "Man may close a door, but God controls the outcome," he wrote, expressing confidence that a more permanent home was already being prepared for the congregation.

He thanked members for their continued loyalty and asked for prayers as the church navigates the transition. "This is a painful chapter, but it is not the end of our story," Mwangi wrote. "God is already preparing the ground for what comes next."
