Former Sports PS Peter Kaberia Among 6 Arrested as EACC Pursues KSh 330M CHAN Money

Former Sports Principal Secretary Peter Kaberia is among six people arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission over the disappearance of KSh 330 million meant for the 2018 CHAN tournament.

The six were arraigned at Milimani Anti-Corruption Court on Tuesday, September 8, after EACC linked them to an irregularly awarded KSh 1.5 billion tender.

The tender for stadium systems was given to M/s Auditel Kenya, which was paid KSh 330 million in advance but did not deliver any work.

EACC told the court the procurement process was flawed and that after receiving the money, it was moved through different entities to hide its source before being brought back to Kenya.

Besides Kaberia, those arrested are Stephen Muthuma, a senior finance officer at the Ministry of Education; John Ruga, an engineer at Sports Kenya; Samuel Mbaa Njoroge of Taxwise Africa; former principal accountant Enock Onditi; and Anthony Kimathi.

All pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy, abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property and money laundering.

EACC is now hunting four more people linked to the same scandal and says it has started a process to recover the lost funds.
